5TH GRADE PAPER TOWER CHALLENGE

5TH GRADE PAPER TOWER CHALLENGE

5th graders transformed into engineers.  The task was to build the tallest tower with 20 pieces of paper and 20 pieces of tape.

Week 1 we discussed how a tall structure was formed and looked at various structures all over the world.  As a class we discussed how they were made and what was important in the construction to create a tall structure.  Students then, formed groups and worked on their design.

Week 2 the groups were given 20 pieces of paper and 20 pieces of tape and they put their plan into action.  The work began!  Students had to work together as a team, communicate their ideas and create a structure that would stand.  They learned by trial and error, team work and had fun creating.

SCHOOL SPELLING BEE WINNERS

Rockwall ISD promotes literacy in many positives formats, one of which is a competitive Spelling Bee.  A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words.  The words usually vary in their degree of complexity and origin.

Spelling bees help to promote literacy by providing children with a positive goal to work toward, and give them a forum to display how hard they worked up to this point.  This is a forum that allows students to display how well they know not only the English language but the origin and root words of many other languages.

Students that choose to participate in the School Spelling Bee work hard studying and preparing for the big day. The winner of the Bee will go on to compete at the district level on January 16th.
